Governments Worldwide Increasing Emergency Preparedness Efforts
October 27, 2026 — Governments around the world are urging citizens to maintain emergency supplies as concerns grow over natural disasters, cyberattacks, power grid failures, infrastructure disruptions and potential military conflicts.
Recommendations range from a minimum of 72 hours to one or two weeks of food, drinking water, medication and other essential supplies.
Meanwhile, the United States military is pursuing an even more extensive preparedness initiative.
Under the Pentagon’s reported FORTRESS America initiative, major U.S. military installations are being prepared to operate independently for up to 90 days without outside support.
That includes maintaining electricity, water, communications, fuel and other essential services if surrounding civilian infrastructure becomes unavailable.
The military is also moving forward with plans to deploy small nuclear reactors at selected installations, providing independent power sources capable of supporting critical operations during extended electrical outages.
The European Union has also promoted a 72-hour emergency preparedness standard across its 27 member states.
The Pentagon’s 90-day objective applies to military installations, while civilian preparedness recommendations vary by country.
With governments worldwide emphasizing emergency readiness and the U.S. military preparing for extended disruptions, one question remains.
What are governments preparing for, and are ordinary citizens prepared for the same possibilities?
