Man Arrested in Louisiana Gold Scam That Nearly Cost Victim $800,000
A major scam operation targeting elderly residents in Louisiana has been stopped after authorities arrested a man accused of trying to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars in gold.
Investigators say 25-year-old Nigam Bhatt traveled from New Jersey to Tangipahoa Parish as part of a coordinated scheme designed to trick victims into handing over large amounts of wealth under false pretenses.
According to officials, the scam followed a familiar but dangerous pattern. Victims were contacted and told their bank accounts or Social Security benefits had been compromised or frozen. They were then instructed to protect their money by converting it into gold.
From there, the suspect would arrange to meet in person and collect the gold directly.
In one case, a victim in the Kentwood area was on the verge of losing more than $800,000 before law enforcement intervened just in time.
Authorities say the arrest was made possible after investigators in Texas identified the scam and alerted Louisiana officials. When the suspect returned to the area to continue the operation, officers were ready and took him into custody before another transaction could take place.
Officials warn this type of scam is not isolated. It is part of a growing trend across the country, specifically targeting older individuals who may be more vulnerable to high-pressure tactics and fear-based manipulation.
Law enforcement is urging the public to stay alert. No legitimate agency will ever ask someone to withdraw money, purchase gold, or hand over assets to resolve an issue. Any request like that should immediately raise red flags.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities believe there could be additional victims connected to the case.
