President Donald Trump has approved the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan by U.S. Army firing squad, more than 16 years after the deadly mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recommended the firing squad execution, and Trump approved the recommendation. The Secretary of the Army will now determine when and where the execution will take place.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, opened fire at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009, killing 13 people and wounding 32 others.
He was convicted in 2013 of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder and was sentenced to death.
The case has remained in the military justice system for years as Hasan pursued appeals of his conviction and sentence.
Now, with presidential approval granted, the military can move toward carrying out the death sentence.
An execution date has not yet been announced.
If Hasan is ultimately executed, it would mark the first U.S. military execution since 1961.
