Abita Springs Man Killed in Head-On Crash on U.S. 190 in St. Tammany Parish
A 50-year-old Abita Springs man was killed Wednesday night after a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 190 near Rapatel Street in St. Tammany Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.
Troopers said the crash happened at approximately 10:40 p.m. on August 5. The preliminary investigation indicates that Joseph M. Fortes Jr. was driving a 2020 Honda Civic westbound on U.S. 190 while a 2007 Ford Expedition was traveling eastbound. For reasons that remain under investigation, the two vehicles collided head-on.
Fortes, who investigators say was not wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford Expedition was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
As is standard procedure in fatal crashes, toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and will be analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Louisiana State Police are asking for the public’s help. Investigators believe a witness may have observed the crash and are urging that individual, or anyone with information or dash camera footage from the area, to contact Louisiana State Police Troop L at (985) 893-6250.
State Police also reminded motorists to always wear seat belts and to avoid driving while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, noting that simple safety precautions can often make the difference between life and death.
