Latest Update: Here’s What Southeast Louisiana Could Experience From the Developing Tropical System

As of the latest forecast, residents across southeast Louisiana should prepare for several rounds of tropical weather beginning Tuesday, with conditions expected to worsen Tuesday night into Wednesday as a developing tropical system moves west along the Gulf Coast. Forecasters expect the system to strengthen into Tropical Storm Bertha before reaching the Louisiana coast.

Right now, the biggest concern is water, not wind.

Heavy bands of rain could produce localized flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage. Streets could quickly become impassable during the heaviest downpours, and motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways.

Along the coast and areas bordering Lake Pontchartrain, a Storm Surge Watch remains in effect. Some surge-prone locations could see 2 to 4 feet of water above normally dry ground, particularly if the current forecast holds.

Wind is expected to be strong enough to bring down tree limbs, scatter unsecured objects, and cause isolated power outages, with gusts potentially reaching around 40 mph in parts of southeast Louisiana.

As for tornadoes, the current forecast does not indicate a significant tornado threat for southeast Louisiana. While tropical systems can sometimes produce brief tornadoes, forecasters say flooding, storm surge, and gusty winds remain the primary concerns at this time.

Forecasts can still change over the next 24 hours, and even a small shift in the storm’s track could alter where the heaviest rain, strongest winds, and greatest flooding occur. Residents are encouraged to keep a close eye on updated forecasts as the system approaches.
