Anchor Lake Evacuation Order Lifted After Dam Safety Concerns Eased

Residents evacuated earlier Thursday near Anchor Lake in Mississippi are being allowed to return home after officials determined the dam remains structurally sound.

The flood watch issued after concerns of a potential dam failure has expired. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality is now continuously monitoring the Anchor Lake dam and reports high confidence in its structural integrity.

According to the National Weather Service, emergency management officials became concerned about the possibility of a dam failure around 3 p.m., which could have caused dangerous flooding along the East Hobolochitto Creek.

As a precaution, residents living near the dam were urged to evacuate while officials assessed the situation.

Authorities now say those residents can return home, but they are encouraged to remain alert and continue monitoring emergency notifications in case conditions change.

The dam is located near Carriere, Mississippi.
