A Slidell man has been arrested after investigators say Snapchat messages helped uncover an alleged sexual abuse involving a 12 year old girl in Baton Rouge.
According to authorities, 32 year old Lemarkis Harry was taken into custody by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office following an investigation that reportedly began after explicit conversations were discovered on the child’s phone. Detectives say the messages allegedly took place over several months and included inappropriate discussions and photos.
Investigators claim the suspect initially presented himself as a teenager before later continuing communication outside of Snapchat through text messaging. Authorities also allege surveillance footage showed a vehicle matching the suspect’s traveling from Slidell to the child’s residence during the timeframe being investigated.
According to arrest records, investigators believe the suspect later became aware of the child’s actual age after seeing school related information that revealed she was only 12 years old. Deputies say additional messages allegedly referenced concerns about evidence and law enforcement involvement after the alleged incident was disclosed.
Harry was booked on charges including first degree rape, indecent behavior with juveniles, computer aided solicitation of a minor, and obstruction of justice.
The investigation remains ongoing.
All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
