Slidell firefighters climb 78 flights in honor of fallen first responders
Slidell firefighters took on 78 flights of stairs Saturday morning, carrying the memory of fallen first responders with them every step of the way.
St. Tammany Fire Protection District #1 firefighters Norman Loustalot and Clayton Lonardo participated in the New Orleans Memorial Stair Climb and Mile of Silence Walk at Benson Tower.
The annual event honors the 343 firefighters, 60 law enforcement officers and eight emergency medical technicians who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Local first responders who have died in the line of duty are also remembered during the event.
For the St. Tammany firefighters, that included four names close to home: Taylor Bass, Jason Theriot, Erik Kreppin and Mike Ford.
Nearly 25 years after 9/11, firefighters are still making the climb and keeping a promise made after one of the darkest days in American history.
Never forget.
