George Floyd’s Siblings Demand Accounting Of Millions Raised Through Memorial GoFundMe

Several members of George Floyd’s family are demanding a full accounting of millions of dollars raised through the Official George Floyd Memorial Fund, saying they have repeatedly sought information about how the money was handled and distributed.

The dispute centers on the massive GoFundMe campaign established following Floyd’s death in Minneapolis in May 2020. An August 11, 2026 letter obtained by TMZ states that the fundraiser ultimately collected approximately $19 million. However, GoFundMe’s own 2020 year end report said the campaign had raised $14.7 million from more than 500,000 donors at that point.

George Floyd’s sisters Zsazsa Floyd and LaTonya Floyd and his brother Rodney Floyd are now seeking financial records from another brother, Philonise Floyd, who organized the fundraiser.

Family Members Want Financial Records

According to TMZ, a Houston attorney representing Zsazsa, LaTonya and Rodney sent Philonise a formal letter requesting a complete accounting of the memorial fund.

The requested documentation reportedly includes GoFundMe reports, financial statements, transaction histories, tax filings and other records showing how the donations were received and distributed. The letter gave Philonise 20 days from receipt to provide the requested information.

The three siblings maintain that they are among George Floyd’s heirs and believe they are entitled to a portion of the money. They say they have not received what they consider their fair share and have repeatedly requested documentation explaining what happened to the funds.

Importantly, the demand for records does not itself establish that money was stolen, misappropriated or improperly spent. The dispute, based on the information currently available publicly, concerns the siblings’ demand for an accounting and their claims regarding distribution of the money.

Rodney Floyd told TMZ that the family wants to review the records and understand how decisions involving the money were made, saying their concern is transparency.

One Of GoFundMe’s Largest Campaigns

The Official George Floyd Memorial Fund became one of the most successful individual crowdfunding campaigns in GoFundMe history.

GoFundMe reported that more than 500,000 people donated to the fundraiser. Its official 2020 report listed $14.7 million raised for Floyd’s family and described the campaign as receiving more donations than any previous fundraiser on the platform.

The approximately $19 million figure now being reported comes from the August 2026 demand letter rather than GoFundMe’s 2020 report. The difference may reflect additional fundraising after GoFundMe published its earlier figure, but publicly available reporting reviewed by TRH News does not independently establish a final total of $19 million.

What The Money Was Intended To Cover

When the fundraiser was established, Philonise said donations would be used for expenses associated with Floyd’s death and the legal proceedings that followed.

Those expenses included funeral and burial costs, counseling, lodging and travel associated with court proceedings and other needs of the family. A portion was also intended to benefit George Floyd’s estate and help provide for his children and their education.

The extraordinary fundraising response came almost immediately after Floyd’s death. Within a little more than a week of the campaign being created, nearly 500,000 donations had already generated close to $13 million.

Siblings Say Previous Requests Went Unanswered

The August letter was reportedly not the siblings’ first attempt to obtain information.

They told TMZ that they had previously requested records and explanations concerning the handling and distribution of the donations but had not received the documentation they were seeking. The siblings also said they contacted attorney Ben Crump seeking information but received no response.

The family’s attorney indicated in the letter that she hoped the dispute could be resolved amicably.

As of the latest public reporting reviewed by TRH News, the allegations amount to a family financial dispute and demand for transparency. No publicly reported finding cited in the available coverage establishes that the memorial funds were illegally handled.

The dispute nevertheless raises a significant question six years after hundreds of thousands of people contributed to one of the largest individual fundraising campaigns in GoFundMe history: whether Floyd’s family members will receive the detailed accounting they are now formally requesting.
