Man killed after stepping onto interstate following earlier crash in Tangipahoa Parish

A deadly chain of events unfolded late Saturday night on Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish, leaving a 26 year old man dead after he was struck while attempting to cross the highway.

According to Louisiana State Police, the incident happened around 11:00 p.m. on March 28 near LA 442 in Tickfaw.

Troopers say the man, identified as Austin B. Gentry of Independence, was involved in an initial crash on the southbound side of I 55. For reasons still under investigation, he exited his vehicle before emergency crews arrived and attempted to cross the interstate.

At the same time, a Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound and struck Gentry in the roadway.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released additional details about the initial crash or whether impairment or other factors played a role. The driver of the vehicle that struck him remained at the scene, according to investigators.

The crash remains under investigation.
