New Projects Could Bring Major Growth and More to Do in Slidell

Big changes may be on the way for Slidell, with new economic and recreational projects in the works that could give residents more options for entertainment, shopping, and outdoor activity.

Mayor Randy Fandal says the city is finally addressing long standing concerns about a lack of recreation.

“We’ve been struggling with recreation here for years,” Fandal said.

One of the biggest projects involves expanding the St. Tammany Trace. The city is working with Norfolk Southern to extend the trail into Heritage Park, with plans to eventually connect it all the way into Old Town. The expansion could make it easier for residents to walk, bike, and gather in some of Slidell’s most popular areas.

Residents say the improvements are overdue.

“There’s not much to do out here other than a shopping mall and a theater,” one resident said.

Fremaux Shopping Center is also expected to see upgrades, including the addition of new retail stores. On top of that, more recreational baseball fields are planned as part of an expansion of local sports facilities.

City leaders say these additions will give families and young people more opportunities to stay active and involved locally.

In addition to recreation and retail growth, Mayor Fandal confirmed that groundbreaking for a new Slidell police headquarters is expected to begin in May.

If completed as planned, these projects could mark a significant step forward in both quality of life and economic development for the Slidell community.
