The Rabbit Hole Is Heartbroken As Beloved Que Rico Cuban Cafe Announces Closure
There are some restaurants that become more than just a place to eat. They become part of the community, a place where families celebrate milestones, friends gather over great food, and regular customers are welcomed like family. For many across Slidell and the New Orleans area, Que Rico Cuban Cafe was exactly that.
Now, with heavy hearts, owners Donna and Rich have announced they are closing the restaurant’s current location.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the owners said the decision was one they never wanted to make.
“This is one post I wish I did not have to make. It breaks our hearts to have to come to the decision of closing Que Rico. It’s been a hard run here and we gave it all we could and more. It’s just not in our best interest to stay open any longer at this location.”
They went on to thank their employees, loyal customers, and everyone who supported the restaurant over the years, saying they made lifelong friends and countless memories along the way.
While the dining room is closing, the story may not be over just yet.
The owners emphasized that this is “not goodbye forever,” adding that they hope to see what the future brings. For the next couple of weeks, Que Rico will continue offering takeout and catering only, Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.
The announcement immediately drew hundreds of emotional reactions from customers who have followed the restaurant through its journey from Slidell to New Orleans and back again. Many encouraged the owners to consider reopening in a smaller location, while others shared memories of favorite meals and promised they would continue supporting the business wherever it lands next.
Small, locally owned restaurants have faced increasing challenges in recent years, from rising food costs and labor expenses to higher operating costs. For many families, losing a local favorite like Que Rico is another reminder of how difficult it has become for independent businesses to survive.
From all of us at The Rabbit Hole, we want to thank Donna, Rich, and everyone at Que Rico for the incredible food, the hospitality, and the memories you’ve given this community over the years. We sincerely hope this is not the end of the story and that we’ll one day be celebrating the return of Que Rico once again.
